NEIL SIMON'S FUNNIEST FARCE COMES TO NORTH YORK THEATRE

Encore Entertainment will be presenting Neil Simon's hilarious comedy, Rumors, at the Toronto Centre for the Arts (Studio Theatre), 5040 Yonge Street, from January 18 until January 28, 2001. All evening performances begin at 8:00 p.m., and matinees on Sunday, January 21 and Sunday, January 28 begin at 2:00 p.m.

The laughter is non-stop as what is supposed to be a 10th anniversary celebration for New York's Deputy Mayor, Charley Brock and his wife Myra rapidly declines into an evening of disaster. The first guests arrive hear a gunshot, then discover Myra missing and Charley incoherent and barely conscious. Fearing the political consequences if Charley's condition is made public, they scramble to cover-up the incident. As the other guests arrive, and the secret leaks out, speculation and rumors abound. What happened here? Did Charley discover Myra had been having an affair? Or did Myra discover Charley's infidelity? And where is Myra? When the police arrive later, the guests are forced to improvise, with hilarious results.

Encore Entertainment has assembled a stellar cast of ten, led by Mario D'Alimonte, Merle Garbe, Debbie Krulicki, and Peter Maxwell. D'Alimonte was recently seen in Encore's productions of Jest A Second, The Fantasticks, and Beau Jest. Rounding out the cast are Bodene Corbitt, Ron Kivinen, Lorn Eisen, Lada Darewych, Aaron Sidenberg, and Natalya Brown.

The play is directed by Zenon Skrzypczyk. The producer is Larry Westlake, who choreographed Encore's productions of Fiddler on the Roof and Anne of Green Gables. According to Westlake, "America's most prolific playwright has done it again! Neil Simon has given us a play with nothing on its mind except making you laugh. There's no hidden message or social significance…just two hours of side-splitting comedy."

Tickets are $22.00 for evening performances and $20.00 for matinees. Discounts are available for students, seniors, and groups. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Toronto Centre Box Office, or by phone at (416) 733-0558. For group discounts or further information, call (416) 733-0558.

Encore Entertainment is a not-for-profit theatre company. JEST A SECOND BLENDS HUMOUR AND HEART OCTOBER 19 - 29

Encore Entertainment will be presenting James Sherman’s romantic comedy, Jest A Second, at the Toronto Centre for the Arts (Studio Theatre), 5040 Yonge Street, from October 19 until October 29, 2000. All evening performances begin at 8:00 p.m., and matinees on Sunday, October 22 and Sunday, October 29 begin at 2:00 p.m.

Humour and heart blend easily together in this modern-day comedy that addresses one of the great societal issues of our day … the dilemma of just how far grown children will go to please their parents. A sequel to last season’s popular Beau Jest, this year it is Joel Goldman, a divorced father of two, who goes to hilarious lengths to keep from disappointing his parents. With believable characters and a timely story, Jest A Second is funny, touching, and unpretentious, and although the Goldman family is Jewish, their story is truly universal.

Encore Entertainment has assembled a stellar cast of six, led by Liz Best, Mario D’Alimonte, David Lang, Marion Hirschberg, and Herb Goldstein . All five are reprising their roles in last season’s production of Beau Jest. D’Alimonte was also seen last season in The Fantasticks and in Jake’s Women (The Village Playhouse). Rounding out the cast is Larry Westlake, who recently directed the Mel Lastman Variety Players' Jerry At Trick Revue.

The play is directed and produced by Merle Garbe, who most recently directed last season’s productions of Beau Jest and The Fantasticks. According to Garbe, "Jest A Second is very funny, partly because anyone who has been a parent (or had one) will be able to relate to it. No matter how old we get, we still worry about displeasing our parents. As always, we are counting on the support of the community, so that we can continue to provide quality theatre for the whole family at an affordable price."
